Cloudflare has announced the general availability of Precursor, a next-generation behavioural validation engine designed to enhance bot management by continuously analysing user behaviour throughout an entire web session.
Built on Cloudflare’s global edge network, Precursor replaces traditional one-time security checks such as CAPTCHAs with continuous behavioural analysis, helping organisations identify sophisticated automated bots while ensuring a seamless experience for legitimate users.
According to Cloudflare, automated bot traffic now accounts for approximately 57 per cent of all web requests, surpassing human-generated internet traffic. The company said this shift has increased the need for security solutions capable of identifying AI-driven bots that can bypass conventional verification methods.
Precursor monitors browser interactions such as mouse movements, scrolling patterns, typing cadence, clipboard activity and page visibility to distinguish between genuine users and automated traffic. The platform is designed to collect aggregate behavioural signals without recording sensitive user information such as keystrokes.
Commenting on the launch, Dane Knecht, Chief Technology Officer, Cloudflare, said, “Traditional security checks look at a single moment in time, but modern bots have gotten smart enough to fake their way through the front door. Instead of just checking an ID at the gate, we are looking at behavior over the entire visit. This makes life seamless for real users, while making it incredibly difficult and expensive for bad actors to fake human behavior. Cloudflare already protects users billions of times a day at critical moments like login and checkout, but until now, the space between those moments was a black box. With Precursor, we’re now eliminating that blindspot.”
The platform can be enabled with a single click without requiring changes to application code. Cloudflare automatically injects a lightweight script that evaluates user interactions in real time and adjusts a visitor’s bot score throughout the session, making it more difficult for malicious bots to evade detection by simply refreshing a page.
The company said Precursor strengthens security by providing continuous, session-level analysis while maintaining user privacy and reducing friction for genuine website visitors.
