Commvault expands Google Cloud partnership to strengthen cyber resilience

Commvault has announced an expanded collaboration with Google Cloud aimed at strengthening data protection, security and resilience for enterprises operating in cloud and hybrid environments.

As organisations continue to move critical workloads to the cloud, the risks associated with ransomware, insider threats and regulatory compliance are increasing. Industry data indicates that cloud attacks are becoming more frequent, while recovery times following ransomware incidents often extend to several weeks, resulting in significant operational disruption. Against this backdrop, Commvault has introduced new capabilities designed to help enterprises protect, recover and govern their data from a single platform.

The expanded collaboration introduces enhanced immutable protection through Commvault’s Air Gap Protect, enabling organisations to store backups in isolated, virtually air-gapped environments within Google Cloud. This approach helps safeguard data from ransomware and insider threats while supporting regulatory compliance through a new archive tier optimised for long-term retention.

Commvault has also extended its Cloud Rewind capabilities for Google Cloud users, allowing enterprises to rapidly rebuild cloud applications and associated dependencies following cyber incidents or deployment failures. This capability is designed to minimise downtime and support faster business recovery during disruptive events.

In addition, Commvault has strengthened data protection for Google Workspace environments by expanding compliance search capabilities within its eDiscovery offering. Organisations can now more quickly locate and export emails and files from Google Workspace backups to support audits, investigations and litigation, helping to reduce the time and cost associated with regulatory and legal processes.

Rajiv Kottomtharayil, Chief Products Officer, Commvault, said the expanded collaboration addresses growing threats targeting backup environments by ensuring that critical data and applications remain protected, isolated and recoverable. Asad Khan, Senior Director of Product Management for Storage, Google Cloud, said the enhanced capabilities provide customers with stronger defences against ransomware and faster recovery options for workloads running on Google Cloud.

Industry analysts noted that the expansion represents an important step for enterprises seeking to improve cyber resilience in cloud environments, particularly as attackers increasingly target backup infrastructure to limit recovery options.

Commvault said the enhanced Air Gap Protect capabilities for Google Cloud are available immediately, while Cloud Rewind and Google Workspace protection can be accessed through Google Cloud Marketplace. Compliance search features for Google Workspace are currently in early access and are expected to be generally available in the first half of 2026.
