Meta and Reliance expand AI partnership in India

Meta has announced a major expansion of its partnership with Reliance Industries through an agreement to develop an AI-enabled data centre in India, marking a significant milestone in the company’s infrastructure investments in the country.

The facility will be located in Jamnagar, where Reliance will build a 168 MW AI-enabled data centre that Meta will lease, with scope for future expansion. The project represents Meta’s first AI-enabled data centre investment in India and is expected to support the company’s growing artificial intelligence and digital infrastructure requirements.

According to Meta, the investment reflects its commitment to India, one of its fastest-growing digital markets. The facility will support the company’s products and AI capabilities while bringing infrastructure closer to its large and expanding user base in the country. The data centre will be powered by renewable energy and cooled using desalinated seawater, with Meta covering the cost of energy and water used for operations.

Commenting on the partnership, Mark Zuckerberg said, “We’re proud to be working with Reliance to build our first AI-enabled data center in India. This world-class facility in Jamnagar will help us scale our AI infrastructure globally while deepening our long-term investment in India’s economy.”

The agreement further strengthens a long-standing relationship between the two companies. Meta invested in Jio Platforms in 2020 and has since expanded its collaboration with Reliance across connectivity, commerce and AI initiatives. The latest project marks a new phase in that partnership, focused on building infrastructure for next-generation AI technologies.

Speaking on the development, Mukesh D. Ambani said, “This partnership with Meta marks a transformative moment for India’s digital infrastructure. Building India’s first built-to-suit AI data centre for a global technology leader of Meta’s scale demonstrates India’s readiness to be at the forefront of the global AI revolution.”

Meta also announced agreements with clean energy providers to support nearly 1 GW of renewable energy capacity in India, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable infrastructure growth.

The partnership is expected to support the expansion of India’s AI ecosystem while strengthening the country’s position as a hub for advanced digital infrastructure and artificial intelligence innovation.
