Cloudflare brings Astro Web Framework team onboard

Cloudflare has announced that the team behind Astro, the popular open-source JavaScript web framework, will be joining the company, marking a strategic move to strengthen the future of high-performance, content-focused websites. Astro, developed by The Astro Technology Company, is widely used by global brands such as Unilever, Visa, and NBC News, along with hundreds of thousands of developers worldwide.

Despite the team joining Cloudflare, Astro will continue to remain open source, ensuring its independent growth and long-term sustainability. The move reflects a shared commitment to making Astro the definitive framework for building fast-loading, content-driven websites under Cloudflare’s stewardship.

As search engines increasingly prioritise speed and users expect near-instant page loads, websites built with heavy JavaScript rendering often struggle to meet performance benchmarks.

Astro addresses this challenge by delivering only the critical code required to render each page, significantly improving load times, search visibility, and user engagement. This performance-first approach has made Astro a preferred choice for developers building modern content-rich websites.

Matthew Prince, Co-Founder and CEO, Cloudflare, emphasised the importance of investing in open-source technologies to maintain a free and open internet. He said that bringing the Astro team into Cloudflare and supporting one of the most impactful performance-focused frameworks would help ensure Astro remains the best-in-class solution for years to come.

Fred Schott, CEO, The Astro Technology Company, noted that joining Cloudflare would allow Astro to scale its development faster while continuing to serve developers across hosting platforms, not just Cloudflare.

Astro already powers platforms such as Webflow and Wix that run on Cloudflare’s infrastructure. The framework recently introduced the beta release of Astro 6, which adds support for more JavaScript runtimes, improves overall performance, and reduces build times. Cloudflare will also continue supporting the open-source community through the Astro Ecosystem Fund, alongside partners including Webflow, Netlify, Wix, and Sentry.
