Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has announced the nationwide rollout of Voice over WiFi (VoWiFi), commonly referred to as Wi-Fi Calling. This advanced service is now accessible to all BSNL customers across every telecom circle in India, ensuring seamless and high-quality connectivity even in areas with weak mobile signals.
VoWiFi allows customers to make and receive voice calls and messages over a Wi-Fi network, providing clear and reliable communication in homes, offices, basements, and remote locations where mobile coverage may be limited. The service operates on an IMS-based platform, supporting smooth handovers between Wi-Fi and mobile networks. Calls are made using the customer’s existing mobile number and phone dialler, eliminating the need for third-party applications.
The service proves particularly advantageous in rural and remote areas, provided a stable Wi-Fi connection is available, including BSNL Bharat Fiber or other broadband services. VoWiFi also alleviates network congestion and is offered free of charge, with no additional fees for Wi-Fi calls.
The launch of VoWiFi is a significant milestone in BSNL’s network modernisation programme and reflects its commitment to enhancing connectivity across India, particularly in underserved regions. The service is supported on most modern smartphones, and customers simply need to enable Wi-Fi Calling in their handset settings.
